The aim of the AEC Early Music Platform (EMP) is to bring together heads of departments, teachers and students in the field of early music to discuss relevant issues and to promote European cooperation in this field.

AEC Early Music Platform – a new departure

At the AEC Early Music Platform meeting in Bremen in April 2012, an important decision was taken to re-organize EMP meetings into an alternating pattern of Forums and Conferences.  The AEC EMP Forum will be held in odd-numbered years (2013, 2015, etc.) and the AEC EMP Conference will be held in even-numbered years (2014, 2016, etc.).

EMP Conferences will put emphasis on the presentation of a selected theme viewed through a number of different aspects.

The EMP Forum will have two key features
  • a stronger emphasis on discussion among the delegates
  • a close integration with the profession by combining each Forum with a major early music festival

This new departure will have several benefits:
• It will allow themes presented at one Conference, and the discussions initiated during break-out groups at that conference, to be taken forward and developed in parallel discussion seminars on agreed topics to be held at the following year’s Forum
•  It will provide a mechanism for generating suggestions from delegates attending the Forum for the fine-tuning of the following year’s provisional conference programme
• it will allow more time to assure the participation of prominent guest presenters at the Conference
• It will strengthen further the ties between conservatoires and festival organisations, between the teaching and performing identities and between students and individuals and organisations active in the market
• There will be a plenary, round-table discussion forming the centrepiece of each Forum.  At the Forum, performers featured at the festival, members of the AEC Early Music Platform, early music students and festival organisers will be gathered into a diverse panel to debate relevant themes in early music in European higher music education
The new pattern will be piloted across 2013-14.

Early Music Platform Preparatory Working Group:
• Peter Nelson (Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Trossingen) - Chair
• Greta Haenen (Hochschule für Künste Bremen)
• Terrell Stone (Conservatorio di Musica "A. Pedrollo", Vicenza)
• Elina Mustonen (Sibelius Academy, Helsinki)
• Thomas Drescher / Jeremy Llewellyn (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Basel)
• Francis Biggi (Haute École de Musique de Genève)
• Johannes Boer (Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag)

The AEC preparatory working groups members work on the preparation of AEC events on voluntary basis. The AEC Preparatory Working Groups are all formed by coopting active individuals in the relevant field of specialization within AEC member institutions. Proactivity, as well as geographical and gender balances are the applied criteria to guarantee the diverse and dynamic character of the groups, who should ideally recreate the diversity of AEC members institutions.  Working group members are financially supported by their home institutions, which cover their travel and accommodation expenses to the working group meetings and to the actual event.

AEC EMP Forum 2013 Utrecht

In 2013 model for an EMP Forum will be pioneered in the Netherlands through collaboration between the AEC, the Utrechts Conservatorium and the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht.  The event is planned to coincide with the opening of the Festival and to run across Friday 30th and Saturday 31st August 2013 (with an optional extension to Sunday morning, September 1st).

This new venture presents a different format from previous Early Music Platform meetings. The emphasis is upon dialogue: within the Forum itself, between all the delegates and, in the wider frame of early music, between those who lead early music in higher education and the musicians, concert promoters and festival organisers who work in this branch of the music profession. AEC is delighted to announce that the Early Music Platform Forum 2013 is to be held alongside the Oude Muziek Festival Utrecht 2013 and has been organised in close cooperation with the Utrechts Conservatorium, the Oude Muziek Festival and the Réseau Européen de Musique Ancienne (REMA).
Based on feedback from the 2012 Early Music Forum in Bremen, four topics have been selected for discussion at the Forum:
A. Curriculum: Learning and Teaching; Repertoire and Research
B. Historically Informed Performance in the ‘YouTube’ age
C. Infrastructure and Environment: special requirements of early music, inside the academy and out in the city
D. Collaboration and international relations: joint projects and joint degrees in early music
Two discussion sessions are planned in the programme; delegates are encouraged to switch between topics so that they can particpate in two of them across the whole Forum. A highlight of the Forum will be a roundtable discussion between performers, students, REMA representatives and representatives of AEC EMP working group and the Oude Muziek Festival Utrecht. Delegates will also have the opportunity of attending a number of outstanding musical events of the festival built in to their registration package. Because space at some of these is limited, you are advised to register early because we may have to close registration if we are over-subscribed.

The meeting will feature also a Master Class for two students ensemble by Skip Sempé (please see the flyer with indications on how and when to apply in Documents and Settings tab)

In 2014, there will be an EMP Conference in Vicenza, Italy. Thereafter, EMP meetings in the Forum and Conference format will alternate from one year to the next.
