Project news: European Opera Academy LAB (EOALAB)

EOALAB contributes to create the new generation of opera makers by reinforcing the link between education, training and the labor market. The project intends to offer new answers to the emerging needs of contemporary opera making in which opera artists need to have entrepreneurial, collaborative and interdisciplinary skills. Based on the concept of shared education, the vision of this project is to trigger innovation in the opera field in Europe and beyond.
Part of the EOA (European Opera Academy) the project acts as it’s laboratory (LAB) aiming to create innovative student-centered teaching and learning approaches. It strengthens cross-border collaboration and exchange of best practices to make opera training laboratories for artistic experimentation and employability for students and young professionals.

The project is a strategic partnership funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union and coordinated by Conservatorium Maastricht. It is made up of eight partners from seven European countries: AEC (Association Européenne des Conservatoires), Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen (BE), Conservatorio di Musica Arrigo Boito, Parma (IT), Instituto Politecnico do Porto – ESMAE (PT), Jazepa Vitola Latvijas Muzikas akademija, Riga (LV), Lietuvos Muzikos ir teatro akademija, Vilnius (LT), Stockholm University for the Arts, Stockholm (SE) and Conservatorium Maastricht (NL).

Being the think tank of the European Opera Academy to jointly elaborate, test and develop innovative approaches in opera education, the findings and intellectual outputs will be disseminated and exploited by other EOA members and will be publicly available to other higher music education institutions and associated institutions.
EOALAB runs until August 2021 and entails several key events of teaching, training, workshops and conferences, as well as presentations and performances. The first of these was the "Preview Festival" at Conservatorium Maastricht which recently took place in 2019 in Maastricht. It will also include a presentation at the AEC Annual Congress and General Assembly in 2020
